Surfboards from Aachen, green fashion from Münster or an upcycling festival in Dortmund. Nothrhein Westfalia (NRW) is a diverse land and so is its sustainable design scene. Compared to average there are quite a lot designers in NRW hwo make sustainability a high priority in their work. Telling the story of this scene is what our NRW Special is about.

Sustainable Living Film Festival

Sustainable Living Film Festival took place in 19 cities simultaneously all over Turkey on November 2016. 25 international documentaries were screened to inspire the audience for sustainable living.

ecosign

The ecosign is a private and independent academy in Cologne-Ehrenfeld with a focus on sustainable design. We visited the ecosign to talk to Professor Karin-Simone Fuhs to find out more about the development of the academy since it was established in 1994.

MehrWert NRW

Design students at the University of Wuppertal and the Folkwang University of the Arts are participating in the contest “Lebensmittel sind mehr wert”, or “Food is valuable” and are designing sustainable media and product solutions. The project was initiated by the Consumer Direct of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Focus of interest of the ECO DESIGN FORUM (EDF) international are the stories of designers all over the world who explore green ideas and develop sustainable products. Designers, artists, creative thinkers and cultural protagonists are meeting up with sustainability experts to exchange thoughts about the relevance of design and art in the fields of economy and society and to learn from each other.

Social Design & Arts

Social design & arts are characterised by their usefulness. Creative thinkers are developing innovative solutions for social issues, encompassing everything from the design of fair trade products, which ensure a living wage for the producers, to interventions in public spaces. It’s all about social commitment.

Ecological Product and Service Design

Sustainable design aims at developing solutions to ecological problems regarding the production, the use and the disposal of products. It is also dedicated to the design of services that represent an improvement for people and the environment alike. “Good ideas” are often the source of truly useful products and range of services.
